Required permits for your food truck in Sweden
Starting a food truck in Sweden? Learn which permits and food safety rules are actually required, including registration, hygiene and location permits.
All Permits & regulations at a glance
Starting a food truck in Sweden is relatively straightforward, but there are several legal requirements you need to meet before you can start selling food. The good news is that our foodtrucks comply with all legal requirements: one thing less to worry about!
Request personal advice1. Register your food truck as a food business
A food truck is considered a mobile food establishment in Sweden. Registration is generally made with the food control authority in the municipality or county where your business will mainly operate. Once your mobile food business has been registered, you can generally operate in other Swedish municipalities without registering the food truck again in every municipality.
However, you must be able to show proof that the food truck is registered if a local authority carries out an inspection.

2. Swedish food safety and hygiene requirements
Food served from a mobile food business must meet the same basic food safety requirements as food served from a permanent restaurant. Your food truck therefore needs to be designed and operated in a way that allows food to be prepared, stored and served safely.
Important areas include:
- Hygienic food preparation
- Hand hygiene
- Cleaning of equipment and work surfaces
- Separation of raw and ready-to-eat food
- Safe refrigeration and temperature control
- Safe storage of ingredients
- Waste and wastewater management
- Protection against contamination and pests
- Access to suitable drinking water where required
A Multiwagon food truck complies with all Swedish requirements and is ready for immediate use.

3. Food safety procedures and HACCP
Food businesses must use food safety procedures based on HACCP principles (Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points). The extent of these procedures can be adapted to the size and type of business, meaning that a small food truck does not necessarily need the same level of documentation as a large food production facility.
Your procedures should cover the risks relevant to your concept, for example:
- Storage temperatures
- Cooking temperatures
- Cooling
- Cleaning
- Cross-contamination
- Personal hygiene
- Allergen management
4. Provide the required food and allergen information
Swedish rules require information about regulated allergenic ingredients to be provided to customers, or customers must be clearly informed that this information is available on request. This is particularly important for typical food truck products such as burgers, sandwiches, sauces and baked products that may contain allergens such as:
- Gluten
- Milk
- Eggs
- Mustard
- Sesame
- Soy
- Nuts
Sweden currently also has national requirements concerning information about the country of origin of certain types of meat used as ingredients in restaurant and food-service meals. These rules apply to food-service businesses, including mobile food operations in situations covered by the regulations. For a burger food truck, this can therefore be relevant when selling products containing beef, pork or poultry.

5. Permission for your selling location
Registering your food business does not automatically give you permission to park your food truck and start selling wherever you want. The rules depend on the location, which is why contacting the local municipality should always be one of your first steps. The municipality can tell you which permits or permissions are required for the location where you want to operate. They often also have useful local knowledge and can advise you on suitable or popular places for food trucks.
Additional tip:
In addition, municipalities may be able to connect you with local markets, events, festivals and other public activities where mobile food businesses are welcome. This can make them an important contact not only for permits, but also for finding good sales opportunities.
6. Alcohol serving licence
If you want to serve alcoholic beverages from your food truck in Sweden, you generally need an alcohol serving licence from the municipality where the business operates. The licence can be permanent or temporary, for example for a specific event, and the municipality assesses whether you meet the requirements under the Swedish Alcohol Act. Because local conditions and fees can differ, always contact the relevant municipality before planning to sell alcohol.
